Chapter 9
Katie
âShiftâs done.â Lex said, finally reaching the car. Even though Katie wasnât working, she offered to give her a ride home. She would need her advice, and that meant that she would have to tell the truth about everything, unfortunately. Lex buckled up and paused for a moment, checking her phone, before turning to Katie and giving her a worried look.
âWhatâs up? You seem . . . a little bothered,â she hesitated to say. Katie knew it. Her hair was probably a mess, from the few minutes she had spent alone in her car, running her hands through her hair to try and calm herself down. She was sure that her hands were shaking, and her face had gone pale a long while ago.
âPromise me you wonât freak out?â Katie asked. It was the first time that she had seen Lex at a loss for words, as they sat in the car, in silence, for a few moments.
âWhat did you do?â From the tone of her voice, Lex was probably imagining a way worse situation. Maybe a dead body in the trunk or a drug deal gone wrong. Not a dinner date. A dinner date was good news to her.
âI didnât kill anyone or anything. Just . . . donât start screaming or anything.â She passed her unlocked phone over to Lex, and watched from the corner of her eye, as she scrolled through their latest texts. The glow from the screen helped Katie see the rising ecstatic joy on Lexâs face, before she turned to Katie with her mouth hanging open.
âOh . . . Oh my God, Katie!â Her voice was squeaky with excitement, and she leaned towards her with her arms open. It was uncomfortable getting a hug while sitting in a car, but Katie savored it. She knew that the news would make Lex go wild. Lex was far more invested in Katieâs love life than she was. This was equal to winning the lottery and probably just as rare.
âYou promised not to freak out!â Katie said, trying to keep up the act of being aloof, but she couldnât help the smile on her face.
She felt exhausted and completely unprepared for this situation, but at least someone was happy. It had been a long time since she saw Lex this excited, except for yesterday, when she had learned that Katie was even potentially talking to someone. It was good. Katie would need all the help she could get in the next hour and a half.
âOkay, but who is this guy?â Lex leaned back into her seat, typing on the phone rapidly before gasping. âOh, my God, heâs GORGEOUS.â
âHeâs just someone I know. Heâs nice, and weâve been talking for the last few days.â Katie shrugged, starting the car and pulling out of the parking garage. They would be heading straight to her apartment. There was no way in hell that Lex would miss the opportunity to help her get ready for her first date in years. It was exactly why she needed to tell her everything.
